2. <cell culture> Any culture medium that uses agar as the gelling agent; used especially with a modifying prefix as; EMB agar. The term is applied both to the dehydrated medium powder containing agar and to the gelatinous medium prepared from it. This gelatinous material, an extract from red algae (mainly Gelidium and Gracilaria species), is most frequently used as a culture medium, especially for bacteria. It is also used as a thickener in foods, but humans cannot digest it.

Synonym: nutrient agar.
