<cell biology> An enzyme that hydrolyzes the beta galactoside linkage in lactose-producing glucose and galactose; also hydrolyzes the chromogenic substrate IPTG (isopropyl thiogalactoside) and thus is used as an indicator of fused genes and gene expression.
