The trihydrate sodium salt of acetic acid, which is used as a source of sodium ions in solutions for haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. It has also been used as a systemic and urinary alkaliser, diuretic, and expectorant.

Pharmacological action: diuretics, expectorants, pharmaceutic aid.
